Establishment and status of KBIF

History and status of KBIF

As a regular member of the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF), Korea has developed the Korean Biodiversity Information Facility (KBIF) to identify, collect and build a cooperative network of natural history resources.

※ Rationale: Operational Regulations of the Korean Committee and Korean Secretariat of the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (Ministry of Science and ICT Order No. 3) To fulfill its obligations as a regular GBIF member and to support its active participation and activities, the GBIF Korean Secretariat was established in the National Science Museum in January 2008.

KBIF, the Korean Secretariat of GBIF, is a national central node, with a network of organizations that have information on Korean biodiversity (NARIS), with clients including major domestic and international organizations such as GBIF and the public.

Roles of KBIF
  • Establishes a system for cross-border exchange and cooperation of biodiversity information-related materials and information
  • Establishes and manages Korea's implementation plan for GBIF, and provides administrative support for the GBIF Executive Committee and Korean delegation to international events related to biodiversity information
  • Promotes projects to secure, distribute, and disseminate biodiversity information in Korea and other countries, and establishes and operates a biodiversity information system
  • Operates and supports the network of the Korean Biodiversity Consortium
