Descripción
The database of Vascular Plants of North Korea is a compilation of the native and naturalized pteridophytes, conifers, and flowering plants recorded in North Korea. It represents an updating of the floral listings. Since then numerous taxonomic and resultant nomenclatural changes have been proposed by the recent revisionary studies, often with molecular data inputs reinterpreting classification. We have consulted the recent publication of Generic Flora of Korea (Park et al., 2007), and the plant database, which called the 'Korea Plant Names Index' at Korea National Arboretum (2017). When personal experience concerning particular plant groups contradicted recent innovations, however, our preferred alternative taxonomic interpretations are followed in this catalogue. The flora of North Korea is probably one of the lesser-known floras in northeastern Asia. Although various flora books were published in North Korea about 20 years ago, the comprehensive checklist of North Korean plants has not been published yet. Since recent plant collections from this country do not span well for more than 80 years, no extensive and comprehensive accounts of its flora exist. Unfortunately, we have not reevaluated records known only from 50 years ago or longer. All taxa are linked to a Cronquist classification, rather than the APG system. Invalidly published names and illegitimate names were excluded here Finally, we thank the Korea National Arboretum and the GBIF for their continued encouragement and support of this project. This checklist was developed using the BRAHMS (Botanical Research And Herbarium Management System).
Registros

The checklist covers all vascular plants reported in North Korea. The covered regions include these provinces and cities: North Hamgyong, Rason, Ryanggang, South Hamgyong, Chagang, North Pyongan, South Pyongan, Pyongyang, Nampo, North Hwanghae, South Hwanghae, Kaesong, Kangwon.

Cobertura taxonómica
This checklist covers all vascular plants (Equisetopsida, Tracheophyta) reported in the area described here. The core taxa considered are species, subspecies or varieties, and their hybrids. For these taxa, we provide synonyms, the accepted and alternative Korea vernacular names in North Korea. The classification is, in hierarchical order: class, subclass, order, family, genus, species, subspecies, and variety. Varieties within subspecies are not accepted, so trinomial names are only present, but most forms are included as synonyms except a few cases.

Datos del proyecto
Institutions outside of the Korean peninsula hold much of the historical, legacy biodiversity information on the region. With nearly 140,000 specimens including the data on specimens stored at foreign herbaria, there is a comprehensive chronological, historical, taxonomic, and geographic coverage of Korean plants including those from inaccessible areas, such as North Korea. Despite an abundance of biodiversity information in collections, there is a pressing need to make this data accessible and integrated sufficiently to foster query-based inquiries to assist with regional conservation priorities. This project will thus mobilize existing biodiversity information and knowledge within the Korean Peninsula using the BRAHMS database. Using the advantages of BRAHMS, the project will be able to query foreign herbaria historical records, generate specimen georeferenced data, and produce photo images about the North and South Korean vascular plants which will published through GBIF.org. Through these goals the project will address the biodiversity information imbalance between South and North Korea and reduce the knowledge gap surrounding the diversity and distribution of vascular plants.

Descripción del diseño | As part of the first phase of the project, a dataset of 15,000 SNUA specimens has been compiled. To enable usability, this dataset set will go through the process of validation and data cleaning, including a retrospective georeferencing, until March 2019. Other datasets are under preparation and a selection of photographs are currently presented on the institute´s website. |
Personas asociadas al proyecto:
Métodos de muestreo
Contributors are mainly two local botanists.
Área de Estudio | The data are sampled manually from literature though additions are based on specimens maintained at institutional herbaria (TI, KYO, TNS, E, A, and LE). |
---|---|
Control de Calidad | All new reports and/or revision must be documented by specimens deposited at institutional herbaria in the future. Suggestions or corrections regarding names and taxonomy may be submitted by users and reviewers through a national institute, although it does not work at all now. |
Descripción de la metodología paso a paso:
- Name suggestions are validated by the editors against names in Tropicos (http://www.tropicos.org), IPNI (http://www.ipni.org), GRIN (http://www.ars-grin.gov), or other plant name databases, before being manually corrected in the database.
